The path to a driver's license
Emergency helpers
You'll take the first aid course. The training lasts approximately 10 hours. The first aid certificate is valid for six years. The course can be completed before the age of 16.
Eye test
You must take an eye test at a licensed optician if your last eye test was more than two years ago.
If you already have an ID card in another category for which you had to take an eye test, this eye test is still valid today, provided it was not taken more than two years ago.
Application form
You need:
- a color passport photo
- the eye test
- Copy of identity card or foreigner’s ID card
Bring the application form in person to the traffic department or residents' registration office. Don't forget your first aid card, Swiss identity card, or foreign national's permit (both in original form). The application can be submitted no earlier than one month before your 18th birthday.
Theory test
If you are ready, register online for the theory test
Learner's permit
You will receive your learner's permit by mail. The learner's permit is valid for 24 months.
Traffic Education (VKU)
Must be completed before the practical test and must not have been completed more than two years ago, except for Category A, A1, or B1 holders.
Driving lessons
A learner's permit must be held. An accompanying person is required. Learner driving lessons may only be undertaken with an accompanying person who is at least 23 years old and has held a Category B driver's license for at least three years and is no longer on probation.
Practical Test
If you do not want to take the practical test in your canton of residence, you can submit an application to the Road Traffic Office of your canton of residence to take the driving test in another canton.
Driver's License
You will receive your driver's license by mail after passing the test.
WAB Course
After passing the practical test, you must attend the WAB course within one year. We recommend that you attend within six months.
Exchange of License
Submit an application for a permanent driver's license to the Road Traffic Office at least one month before the expiration date of your provisional driver's license. You will receive the application form from the WAB course provider.
General examination requirements
- Correct, largely automated vehicle operation
- Driving style that protects the environment by causing as little noise and exhaust fumes as possible
- Anticipatory behavior to recognize hazards early and avoid them
- Correct use of the roadway and lanes
- Correct behavior when merging into traffic, merging, turning, and changing lanes
- Driving style and speed are always adapted to the conditions on the road, in traffic, and visibility
- Appropriate distance when driving side by side and behind each other
- Anticipatory, appropriately cautious approach to junctions
- Observance of signals and road markings as well as police instructions
- Traffic-appropriate use of right of way
- Correct behavior at pedestrian crossings and towards public means of transport and their passengers
- Consideration for other road users, especially vulnerable ones
- Correct and sensible overtaking
- In special conditions: conscious and adapted driving on motorways and highways
- Independent driving according to signposts
- Securing the vehicle on uphill and downhill gradients
- U-turning using a driveway
- Parking, forwards and backwards, between vehicles that are at right angles, diagonally, or parallel to the edge of the road
- Performing maneuvers without obstructing traffic; making appropriate corrections.
